Greater Richmond’s utility providers offer companies reliable and affordable service, including some of the most competitive electricity rates in the nation.

Electric Power

Dominion Energy is the major provider of electric service in the Greater Richmond area with Southside Electric Cooperative and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative also providing service. Dominion Energy offers a variety of rate options that may lower operating costs for commercial and industrial users.

• Average Rates (bundled rates, as of Summer 2022, cents per kWh):
  • Industrial: 6.86¢ (1,000 kWh demand; 650,000 kWh/month)
  • Commercial: 8.24¢ (40 kWh demand; 14,000 kWh/month)
  • Residential: 12.03¢ (1,000 kWh/month)

Telecommunications

Local telephone service is provided throughout the region. An extensive fiber optic network with digital switching capability and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) self-healing fiber optic rings insures uninterrupted service. Special Access Services (DS1, DS3, OC-12 and OC-48) are available throughout the area.

The MAREA, Dunant and BRUSA trans-continental fiber lines run through Greater Richmond from Virginia Beach to the Washington, D.C., area.

High-speed internet and wireless options are abundant with various competitors covering the major business pockets of the region.

Water and Sewer

The majority of the region’s water is provided by interconnected central municipal systems. Water sources include the James and Appomattox rivers, Swift Creek Reservoir and groundwater. Excess water and wastewater capacity is available for new and expanding companies.
